I had a great deal of difficulty obtaining this CD. The stores in the
UK said that it was deleted - fortunately CDnow didn't agree.
Jill's voice is something like a sweeter version of Cyndi Lauper, she uses it to great effect singing keenly observed character studies and songs. The first two tracks are character studies - the sound is lightweight and superficially cheery but when you listen to the lyrics there is a depth to them. Other tracks - Karen By Night and Vrbana Bridge, for example, tell stories. I Kissed A Girl has to be the highlight of the disc - the combination of the finely drawn verbal pictures and the wonderful timing of the chorus make it irresistable. Houdini's Box has a very odd refrain - it reminds me of another song but I just can't place it - it's still a great track, though, generally the album keeps a consistently high standard.
Supermodel is one of a couple of exceptions to the 'lightweight' sound I mentioned earlier - there is a wonderfully manic guitar - the credits imply that it is played by Jill Sobule. Once again the lyrics have an unexpected meaning to them.
The album is rounded off by the wistful and sad Now That I Don't Have You, completing a roller-coaster ride of emotion and humour.
The songs carry copyright dates between 1991 and 1995, so it seems that the album draws on a larger body of work, which could account for the quality.
